Press | Steinem Strikes a Pose for BUST Magazine

NEW YORK, NY (December 5, 2000) Feminist icon Gloria Steinem, who made headlines this fall with her marriage to activist David Bale, appears this month on the cover of BUST, the hip magazine "for women with something to get off their chests." With her hands on her hips, and wearing a T-shirt that reads "F Word" spelled out in rhinestones, Steinem's image poses a humorous challenge to the idea that "feminism" is a dirty word, while simultaneously dispelling the myth of the "unfunny feminist."

Steinem, who in the past has tried to avoid being represented as the single figurehead for feminism, and who has never appeared on the cover of her own magazine, Ms., had originally agreed to be photographed on BUST's cover together with Riot Grrrl pioneer Kathleen Hanna. But when Hanna - who is also the frontwoman for the band Le Tigre - had a tour schedule which made such a shoot impossible, Ms. Steinem reluctantly agreed to be on the cover by herself. "She's really supportive of younger feminists, and she didn't want to let us down," said Debbie Stoller, BUST's Editorial Director. The issue of BUST on which Steinem appears is entirely devoted to the subject of feminism and the ambivalence that many younger women feel about it.

The images were shot by world-renowned photography team Guzman, whose clients include Evian, Louis Vuitton and Givenchy. "Gloria was extremely graceful and cooperative. She just said she wanted to make sure she looked like she was in on the joke," said BUST Creative Director Laurie Henzel. "We promised her she would." As a result, the photograph of Steinem that appears on the cover and another, printed inside the magazine, in which Steinem is smiling broadly and throwing her arms in the air, are a far cry from the stereotype of the stern-faced feminist.

"She's a charismatic leader, and an inspiring icon," said Stoller. "And she's also a great sport."

BUST magazine is sold at bookstores and newsstands nationwide, or can be ordered directly from http://www.bust.com.
