Press | RSUB PUBLISHES DANNY CLINCH'S WHEN THE IRON BIRD FLIES, PHOTO CHRONICLE OF THE TIBETAN FREEDOM CONCERTS 1996-1999, IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE MILAREPA FUND

November 10, 2000: Photographer Danny Clinch, renowned for his work with musicians of all walks, has compiled a unique and powerful collection of images entitled When the Iron Bird Flies. The book, to be available in early December, is a chronicle of Clinch's work and the past four Tibetan Freedom Concerts, where under a pole and drape tent, he photographed some of the most compelling portraits of musicians, Tibetan monks and nuns, dignitaries, crew and concert organizers.

Clinch's photos document the excitement and spirit of the concerts as hundreds of people came together to produce an event focused on bringing attention to the plight of the Tibetan people and their 50-year, nonviolent struggle for freedom. Black and white images interspersed with full color photos are accompanied by quotes from participating artists, concert speakers, former political prisoners, and facts on the current situation in Tibet. Performance shots, candid moments backstage and fantastic portraits of artists like the Beastie Boys, Bjšrk, Radiohead, Michael Stipe and the Tibetan band Chaksam-pa are just some of the highlights of this special book.

When the Iron Bird Flies is published by RSUB in close collaboration with the Milarepa Fund, a nonprofit organization co-founded by Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys, dedicated to Tibetan Freedom and organizers of the Tibetan Freedom Concerts. The book, Clinch's second to be published by RSUB (his first, Discovery Inn was published in 1998), will be available in stores nationwide in December. Clinch says of the book, "My love of music, first and foremost, drew me towards the Tibetan Freedom Concerts. But like many of the musicians and music fans that came to the events, I also became educated and inspired by the Tibetan cause. My hope is that this book will do the same for others."

In addition, Palm Pictures has recently released a DVD version of the film Free Tibet with brand new packaging. The film documents the first Tibetan Freedom Concert in 1996, which took place in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park and features dynamic concert footage as well as numerous interviews with artists, fans and organizers.
