Press | For Immediate Release: BUST Magazine Proves that Bad Girls Enjoy Good Housekeeping NEW YORK, NY March 2001- Are young feminists trading Betty Friedan for Betty Crocker? According to BUST magazine, they just might be. The Spring 2001 issue of the hip women's magazine is dedicated to the typically feminine activities of cooking, crafting, and even cleaning. For contrast, the previous issue was entirely devoted to the topic of feminism, and featured Gloria Steinem on the cover. With it's current issue, BUST magazine poses the question, "Are today's liberated women thinking about taking up new careers as happy housewives?" Not quite. According to Editor-in-Chief Debbie Stoller, "Our culture has often dismissed Ôwomen's work'Ñeverything from raising children to baking bread to sewing clothing-as being simple, brainless, and even worthless. We thought it was time to give some respect to this kind of work, and to reconsider how important it is to creating a fulfilling life." In the issue, Sandra Bernhard, trades her caustic comedy for a vacuum cleaner and discusses the politics of housecleaning. Fellow comedienne Amy Sedaris (the star of Comedy Central's sitcom, "Strangers with Candy") presents her cheese ball recipe and poses in her apartment amidst a collection of plastic meats and preserved furry friends. And a woman who moonlights as a topless housecleaner airs the dirty laundry associated with her line of work. Inserted in the issue is a 16-page section called "A Bad Girl's Guide to Good Housekeeping." It includes a large assortment of recipes, craft ideas, and cleaning tips submitted by BUST readers themselves. Tips included are ideas on outfits to wear while cleaning house, ways to break the ice with a the local laundromat cuties, how to make a decoupage chest for a sex toy collection, and recipes ranging from Turkey and White Bean Chile (made with chipotle peppers) to a "Slacker Rice Recipe" whose ingredients include only rice and salad dressing. With the new issue, BUST Magazine proves that bad girls do enjoy good housekeeping. "Home Girls", The Spring 2001 issue of BUST, is currently on newsstands.
